35 years ago, Mike Mainieri, Michael Brecker, Don Grolnick, Eddie Gomez and Peter Erskine embarked on an anthological adventure with a series of recordings that shook up the world of jazz-fusion: Steps Ahead. With their combination of vibraphone / piano / saxophone, unparalleled rhythmic complicity and resolutely lyrical writing, these pioneers set the stage for a genre that was to draw a great many followers over the next three decades. Today, five internationally renowned Belgian jazzmen have decided to pay tribute to them. Strengthened by fantastic track records they have all performed at the biggest festivals alongside artists such as Toots Thielemans, Tom Harrel, Chaka Khan, Manu Katché, Claude Nougaro, Richard Galliano and Joe Lovano, to name but a few. Armed with a huge devotion to the legendary quintet, they revisit it and offer us a refreshing new take!
